It depends.
There is not a rule.
The final result is what matters.
I always find it hard to listen to my voice without feeling a sense of what we can call “disgust, awkwardness” …
I’m not a technical singer and, on the contrary … to put it bluntly, I am pretty lame…
Sometimes it happens to be satisfied, but I always have to work hard to find the right way to be happy with the final result.
With The Mon, being a more intimate project, I learned to use the voice in a slightly different way, looking for a bit more particular and twisted vocals.
I usually record all the clean voices and then filter them through the pedal that I also use live (which was a tc helicon voicelive and now a Boss VE20).
The vocal bus is then usually “soaked” in an ambient reverb and then compressed during the mixing phase.
I try to use as few plugins as possible, in order to have an effect similar to that I obtain in a studio, or live during concerts.
I always add “hidden” voices, perhaps following slightly different melodies, which are counterbalanced, sometimes screamed or whispered to give to the final track a different spatiality, ambient and atmosphere.
These are mixed with different pans and lots of reverb and delay.
And the result is what You can listen at the end… don’t judge too bad!
One last thing and curiosity I always notice when recording vocals is that I find it hard to sing without playing the bass … it’s like I miss “the tuner”.

Dipende.
Non c’è una regola fissa.
L’importante è il risultato finale.
Faccio sempre molta fatica ad ascoltare la mia voce senza provare un senso di ribrezzo, di imbarazzo…
Non sono un cantante tecnico e, anzi… per dirla schiettamente, mi faccio abbastanza cagare.
A volte mi capita di essere soddisfatto, ma devo sempre lavorare parecchio per trovare la quadra per essere felice del risultato finale.
Con The Mon ho imparato ad usare la voce in maniera un po’ diversa, cercando cantati un po’ più particolari e contorti, essendo un progetto più intimo.
Solitamente registro tutte le voci pulite e quindi le filtro attraverso il pedale che uso anche live (che è stato un tc helicon voicelive ed ora un boss VE20).
Il bus delle voci viene poi solitamente “imbevuto” in un riverbero d’ambiente e quindi compresso in fase di mixaggio.
Cerco di usare meno plugin possibili, per poter avere un effetto simile a quello ottenuto in studio, anche nei concerti.
Aggiungo sempre delle voci “nascoste”, magari che seguono melodie leggermente differenti, che fanno controcanti, magari urlate o sussurrate e danno alla traccia finale una spazialità differente.
Queste vengono mixate con pan differenti e molto riverbero e delay.
Il risultato finale è quello che potete ascoltare sui vari dischi…
