Hard question.
Let’s start with the basses that I don’t like.
I’ve tried, but Fenders don’t tell me much.
They have a sound too much into Medium frequencies, far from what I’m looking for.
Then I can’t stand the basses that seem like chocolates (like Warwick to be clear…).
Even if the worst bass ever remains, in my opinion, the Steinberger … 
Let’s close this parenthesis about negative things which I believe still reaches its peak with the first bass I owned … a red 5-string Washburn in a black plastic case …
But  that’s water under the bridge and I hoped I’d forgotten about it …
As for the non-Rickenbacker basses that I like I could say the Hofner 500 is one of them, because it was played by one of the best bassists of all time, Sir Paul McCartney.
But it doesn’t drive me crazy.
I could say the Ibanez ICB300, the one of Paul Stanley.
But no … it fits, but it’s not my thing, too modern in some way … apart from the pleasantness of Mr Stanley…
At the end, there are 3 instruments that I find beautiful, both aesthetically and in terms of sound.
And they are all Gibson.
In third position I would put the SG.
I prefer it on a short scale and I own one that sounds really great.
Never choose red or black (paint problems ruining the sound, I was told…).
Mine is brown and it has a very warm sound, it’s way powerful.
I must say that also the Epiphone ones sound good.
In second place I put the RD with the MOOG electronics.
I have one from 1979, I looked for it and found it.
But it weighs a lot, it feels like playing with a musk ox perched on your shoulder and after a couple of hours of rehearsal you will find yourself feeling older than what you already are … sore and dead tired.
I tried to sell it, but in the end I couldn’t.
I think it’s doomed to stay with me.
And… drum roll… we put the Thunderbird first!
It’s a wonderful bass and I love the shape and sound.
And it’s one of the few basses I’ve never had, other than an Epiphone (which sounds great) that I use very often in the rehearsal room.
Sooner or later I’ll be able to find a nice Thunderbird.
Maybe a glittered green one …

Domanda difficile.
Partiamo dai bassi che non mi piacciono.
Ci ho provato, ma i Fender non mi dicono molto.
Hanno un suono medioso, lontano da quello che cerco.
Così come non sopporto tutti i bassi che sembrano dei cioccolatini (tipo Warwick per intenderci…).
Anche se il più brutto basso in assoluto resta, a mio parere, lo Steinberger…
Chiudiamo questa parentesi sulla negatività che credo tocchi comunque l’apice con il mio primo basso… un Washburn 5 corde rosso con custodia in plasticone…
Ma ne è passata di acqua sotto i ponti e speravo di essermene ormai dimenticato…
Per quanto riguarda i bassi non Rickenbacker che mi piacciono potrei dire l’Hofner 500 perché lo suonava uno dei migliori bassisti di tutti i tempi, Sir Paul McCartney.
Ma non mi fa impazzire.

Ma no… ci sta, ma non è il mio genere, troppo moderno… e la simpatia di mr Stanley non aiuta certamente…
Ci sono 3 strumenti che invece trovo bellissimi, sia esteticamente che come suono.
E sono tutti e tre Gibson.
In terza posizione ci metterei il famoso diavoletto, l’SG.
Lo preferisco a scala corta e ne possiedo uno che suona davvero benissimo.
Mai sceglierlo rosso o nero (problemi di vernice che rovina il suono, mi è stato detto…).
Il mio è marrone e suona davvero caldo, potente.
Credo di averlo usato come back-up in qualche tour.
Devo dire che anche l’Epiphone suona bene.
Al secondo posto metto l’RD con le elettroniche MOOG.
Ne ho uno del 1979, l’ho cercato e l’ho trovato.
Ma pesa tantissimo, sembra di suonare con un bue muschiato appollaiato su una spalla e dopo un paio d’ore di prove ti ritrovi a sentirti ancora più anziano di quanto tu non sia già… dolorante e stanco morto.
Ho provato a venderlo, ma alla fine non ci sono riuscito.
Credo sia destino che rimanga con me.
E… rullo di tamburi… al primo posto ci mettiamo il Thunderbird!
E’ un basso meraviglioso e adoro la forma e il suono.
Ed è uno dei pochi bassi che non ho mai avuto, se non un Epiphone (che suona benissimo) che uso molto spesso in sala prove.
Prima o poi riuscirò a trovare un bel Thunderbird.
Magari verde glitterato…:-)
